Dave created a physical product, the DR Performance Practice Deck 1.0.
The DR Performance Practice Deck represents a new way to practice for practical shooting sports.
Consisting of 52 basic shooting drills superimposed on a normal deck of playing cards, the deck allows you to have a thorough, fun, and effective practice session while avoiding the inevitable question “Well, what do I do now?”. Its small, light, and fits easily in your shooting bag. And, in a pinch (like a long delay between stages at a match), it can even serve as a normal deck of playing cards.
We approached Dave to see about making a digital version of the Practice Deck. iPhones were growing strong in popularity, and we saw more and more of them on the range. It only made sense to have a digital version of the Practice Deck, one that wouldn’t blow away in the breeze and could also keep track of your score so you could track your progress and improvement.
Collaboration was key in this project. The spirit and metaphor of “cards” and “decks” needed to be maintained, but expanded to do what a mobile app can do that a physical product cannot. Furthermore, it was important to maintain the integrity of and promote the DR Performance Shooting brand. Hsoi Enterprises and DR Performance Shooting worked closely together on the design, features, and workings of the app to ensure it conveyed the proper vision and would satisfy the needs of the end user.
The result is a simple yet elegant app, maintaining the metaphor and branding of DR Performance Shooting, and providing practical shooters of various disciplines (IPSC, USPSA, IDPA) or just pistol enthusiasts with a key tool towards improving their shooting skill.
When John approached me about developing an iOS application version of my Practice Deck product, I was cautious. I’d had the same conversation with two other developers, and in both cases the project died before it got off the ground. With John, things were quite different. He followed up quickly to schedule a pre-development meeting, where he presented me with a well thought out outline of his concept for the application, mock-ups of the proposed screens and functionality, and a preliminary development schedule. Any concerns or questions that I had were immediately addressed, and my comfort level with John and the project found a very high level after just this meeting.
Through the development process, he communicated frequently and clearly about the status of the application, and any challenges he’d come across. When he provided me a beta version of the application to examine, I expected the normal “mostly functional but buggy” beta that I was familiar with from my experience as a developer. Instead, I had a fully formed, fully functional application that worked as planned and projected. The application was released to Apple’s AppStore on schedule.
John set my expectations during our first meeting, and then fully exceeded them with what he delivered. His support following release has been prompt and stellar, as well. In a world of fly-by-night operators providing half-baked products, John’s absolute professionalism and “get it done right the first time” attitude are a breath of fresh air. Should I need another application created in the future, I have no doubt that I would turn to John and Hsoi Enterprises to make it happen.
